  4. PROBLEM:  The computer is not booting from the C Drive.
  5.  
  6.           o  Symptom(s):
  7.  
  8.                1) When booting up, the computer gets a "Hard Disk 
  9.                   Failure" or "Disk C Failure Initialize" error.
  10.  
  11.           o  Diagnosis:
  12.  
  13.                1) Try booting up from A Drive.
  14.  
  15.                2) Install the hard disk into another machine.     
  16.                   Try to re-boot from C Drive.
  17.  
  18.                3) Swap cables.
  19.  
  20.           o  Solution:
  21.  
  22.                1) Bad hard disk controller on the mother board.  
  23.  
  24.                     -  Install a new external controller.
  25.  
  26.                     -  Jumper the correct pins.
  27.  
  28.                2) Bad mother board. Replace it.

  31. PROBLEM:  Computer continually loses parts of the configuration
  32.           (setup). 
  33.  
  34.           o  Diagnosis:
  35.  
  36.                Turn computer on and off, or re-boot.  
  37.  
  38.                     1) Are there any configuration or other error 
  39.                        messages? (Eg. "Real Time Clock Error," 
  40.                        "Invalid Configuration: Please run SETUP   
  41.                        program.")
  42.  
  43.                     2) Look at the configurations in the setup    
  44.                        menu.  Are any of the settings different?  
  45.                        (Eg. The system clock has stopped.) 
  46.  
  47.           o  Solution:
  48.  
  49.                In the above example, the real-time clock (RTC)
  50.                has a built-in quartz battery, and is located in
  51.                the Dallas chip on the motherboard.  If setup is
  52.                lost, then:
  53.  
  54.                     1) Replace the Dallas chip (part # DS1287).   
  55.                        Hallmark has it in stock, (818) 773-4500.

  57.                     2) Replace the motherboard.

  60. PROBLEM:  When booting up, the computer gets a specific Beep Code
  61.           error 1 1 3.
  62.  
  63.           o  Diagnosis:
  64.  
  65.                Check the CMOS for write/read capability.
  66.  
  67.           o  Solution:
  68.  
  69.                The CMOS write/read has failed.  Replace the CMOS
  70.                chip or have an Authorized Service Center replace
  71.                the chip.
